What Is Nervous System Coaching?
Nervous system coaching is guided support for shifting out of chronic stress and into a body that has more capacity, using tools like breath work, movement, and heart coherence rather than talk alone.
I call this nervous system literacy: the ability to notice what’s happening in your body, name it, and work with it instead of around it.
Science is: understanding what’s actually happening in your biology, your neural chemistry, your activated states, and learning to shift them.
Magic is: using that same capacity to grow. Not just coming down out of survival mode, but opening up into more creativity, more pleasure, more of the life you’re actually building.
Signs you’re living from an activated state
Racing through the day and crashing at night.
Snapping at the people you love most, then feeling guilty about it.
Making big decisions from a tight chest instead of a clear head.
Feeling like you have to earn rest.
Waking up already tired.
These aren’t character flaws. They’re signals. Your body is doing exactly what it’s built to do after a long stretch in survival mode.
The science part: what’s actually happening in your body
When we’re chronically stressed or triggered, our biology shifts into protection mode. Heart rate climbs, breath goes shallow, blood flow pulls away from the parts of the brain we need for clear thinking and creativity.
That’s not a personal failing. That’s wiring.
The good news is that it’s trainable. A 2025 research review found that heart rate variability biofeedback, the same territory as the heart coherence work I draw from the HeartMath Institute, measurably builds the body’s capacity to recover from chronic stress (source).
The magic part: beyond regulation
Regulation is where this starts, not where it ends.
Once your nervous system has more capacity, you’re not just less reactive. You have more room for the parts of you that got shelved while you were in survival mode: creativity, intuition, pleasure, the sense that your success can feel like something you embody instead of something you force.
How this work happens
I bring 15 years as a yoga instructor and dance teacher, a college background in neuroscience, training in Rolfing (hands-on structural work with connective tissue) through the Dr. Ida Rolf Institute, and several modules of biodynamic craniosacral training, together with five years of coaching women through exactly this shift.
The tools I draw on include yoga (both vinyasa and the slower restorative and yin practices), shaking, conscious breath work, tapping, heart coherence, and co-regulation (borrowing calm from a regulated nervous system in the room with you).
Is this right for you?
This work is a good fit if you’re a high-achieving woman who has already done the thinking, the strategizing, the pushing, and who’s ready to bring your body into the picture too.
I’m not a licensed therapist, and this isn’t a replacement for therapy. Many of my clients do both at once. Think of this as the somatic, body-based half of the work, alongside whatever else is supporting you.
What to expect
This isn’t a quick fix, and it isn’t meant to be forever, either. Most engagements start at a minimum of 3 sessions and run anywhere up to 6 months. Some clients come back to this work for years, not because it isn’t working, but because life keeps handing us new things to metabolize.
Frequently asked questions
How is this different from therapy? Therapy and nervous system coaching work well together, but they’re not the same thing. I’m not a licensed therapist. This work is body-based and somatic: we’re working with your physiology directly, not primarily with your thoughts or your history.
How much does it cost? Packages and pricing are on the work with Amanda page.
How long until I notice a difference? Every nervous system moves at its own pace, but most clients notice something shifting, better sleep, less reactivity, a calmer body, within the first few sessions. The deeper capacity-building work tends to unfold over months.
Do I need to already know what’s “wrong” before I start? No. Most clients start simply knowing something feels off, tight, or exhausting. Naming exactly what’s happening in your body is part of what we do together, not something you need to arrive with.
